Concept: Red Hill - A plot Summary for a proposed fantasy action blockbuster

They call them the Garfish. But these were more than just sea creatures. They were ruthless pirates preying on defenseless island nations in the East Indies. Their ships were adored with sharp battering rams, their soldiers wielded spears, and for the longest time they were unstoppable. Year after year they came, killing men, raping women, kidnapping children, unless the villagers present a "protection tribute". Every few years during the monsoon, the Pirates would return to the island of Temasek and demand a tribute of gold and resources. Should those be in sufficient, the Garfish would take young men to be sold as slaves, girls to be prostituted. And for as long as one could remember, the chief's had given in to those demands in exchange for peace.

But enough was enough. The younger son and elder daughter of the chief of Temasek (always having to hide in the northern hills) had grown weary of this endless cycle. The son tries to unite the tribes of temasek to fight back against the invaders but to no avail while the daughter yearns to leave this troubled island for a faraway land of peace. One day the son encounters a boy in the forests. A pale hermit with golden hair and uncanny knowledge about military tactics. He befriends the chief's son and provides him the opportunity to strike back at their pirate oppressors.
Together, they rally the villagers and begin to train the young and able bodied in the art of warfare. All the while, the chief's son and the hermit develop a bond of brotherhood.

The fair skinned hermit displays uncanny combat skills and strategic planning. Together the two unite the outlying villagers, gathering men of all trades into an army; the hermit providing the training, the chief's son rousing their spirits with passionate speeches. As more young men join the war effort, the son and the hermit earn the nicknames "prince" and "ghost"; one a budding leader, the other an answer to the prayers of an oppressed people. As part of the defense of Temasek, the Prince and the Ghost order the construction of a barrier along the coastline. Consisting of sharpened tree trunks angled out toward the sea, this barrier would have to be positioned just below the tide.

Construction is not easy. Tempers flare, tension mounts and old rivalries are laid bare. However through his strength and his companion's timely advice, the Prince is able to quell such dissent and strengthen the bonds between villagers. .Into this grueling age, the chief's daughter develops close feelings for the hermit. She believes he is a foreigner who would be able to whisk her away from the life of misery she has known since birth. The chief's daughter tries to win Ghost's affection but it becomes clear that he has no interest in her and only grows closer to the Prince. The Prince and the Ghost grow inseparable, with Ghost becoming highly protective of the Prince. Challenges to his leadership are quickly and violently put down by the skilled hermit.the biggest challenge came from the Prince's father, the chief. He tries to sway the people into believing that the plan to fight back would backfire, resulting in greater loss of lives and a fierce retribution from the Pirates that would leave the island a burnt out, lifeless land. The prince becomes convinced by the Ghost that it was the chief who planted his loyalists among the Prince's army and caused the initial dissension. When a heated argument shakes the Prince's resolve, his friend the hermit assassinates the chief, accusing him of holding back the prince from his full potential. It is here that we see that the Ghost may be something other than human as he exhibits a dark power and uses its influence to convince the guards of treachery perpetrated by Garfish assassins.

In time, a wall of sharpened branches angled out to sea is constructed, the army of temasek stands ready. Trouble brews on the Homefront though. The chief's daughter continues her attempts to convince Ghost to leave Temasek with her. When Ghost makes it clear he intends to stay after Temasek is freed the chief's daughter becomes increasingly desperate. She resents Ghost for spurning her advances and for becoming the sibling to her brother that she never was. When he violently rejects her attempted at seduction, her resentment turns to hatred. Her brother too ignores her, regarding her as childish unfocused and disloyal.

At the appointed time, the Garfish return, The prince and his entourage meet with a Garfish envoy just off the coast. But instead of bowing to their demands, the prince kills the envoy and retreats to Temasek through a hidden gap in the spiked wall. In a rage at this treachery, the pirate leader sends most of his fleet to destroy the villages. With only bloodlust on their minds, the Pirates blindly advance only for their ships to crash against the hidden wall of spikes. Ships are smashed, bodies impaled, and while the attackers wallow in confusion, the prince's army reveals itself and charge towards the water's edge slaying without mercy. The pain and anger over Years of suffering are unleashed against the hapless invaders in a bloody carnage that stains the sands red. It is a great battle, one that would be told and retold for generations to come. In the end, only the pirate leader and his ship's crew are left having waded to a secluded swamp to escape the battle. Unknown to them, their escape was spotted by the chief's daughter who was overlooking the battle from a nearby hill.

Night came and the villagers celebrate their victory. Under cover of darkness, the chief's daughter meets up with the pirate captain and promises him the chance for vengeance in exchange for making her a part of his crew. She sees the Pirates as the only way to fulfil her dream of leaving Temasek and to exact revenge on the one who spurned her. They find the Ghost in his secluded hut on a hill but it seems he is ready for them. At that time, the Prince had no interest in the festivities. Shaken by the deaths he had caused, he goes out searching for his companion for advice and comfort. He hears the sound of battle coming from the hill and runs to investigate

There he comes across massacred pirates, the pirate leader disarmed, his terrified sister, and a demonic form that used to be Ghost. Ghost has revealed his true supernatural nature and proceeds to drain the blood of the pirate leader. The Princes sister begs the prince to kill Ghost, claiming innocence. Ghost silences her by decapitaiton before returning to his human form.

Prince and Ghost share a tense moment. Ghost does not try to explain the presence of his sister or how she tried to kill him, he only asks if Prince will accept him after seeing his true nature. Racked with grief and confusion, Prince charges at his former friend fueled by rage. The scuffle is brief but surreal. Ghost lies dead, princes mind snaps under the trauma of losing everyone close to him. As he sits crying, blood issues forth from the dead bodies and soaks the soil of the hill. Camera pulls back to reveal the soil slowly turning blood red. The red fills the screen just before the end credits roll.

5 other Light Novels that deserve a hollywood adaptation - And how Hollywood would change them.

Edge Of Tomorrow has earned critics' praise. Little do most people know that it was adapted from a japanese light novel called "All you need is Kill".

Now, here are 5 more light novels i would like to see in live action blockbuster form.

I also reflected on expected changes that we might see if these get adapted into movies.

1) Full Metal Panic

Tone: A-Team and Terminator without cyborgs, in a high school setting, with mechs.

Plot synopsis: Eighteen year old Katherine "Kathy" Connelly is the smart, sporty, and good looking, head of the student council at Dyson College. Her hot headed nature and tomboy demeanour makes her less of the hot prom date than "one of the guys". All is well, all is good, until a foreign transfer student arrives: Souske Sagara. This isreali with a japanese name turns out to be highly trained professional commando on a mission to protect Kathy whom his employers believe to be the last of "The Whispered"; humans with hidden knowledge of a long lost alien technology. He proves only too effective in dispatching anyone who gets too close, including the occasional panty thief, and ruining Kathy's social life. Amid the high school hijinks, a sinister force from Souske's past is plotting to kidnap Kathy. And he might just get the chance with an upcoming field trip.

2) Vampire Hunter D

Tone: Dirty Harry meets Aliens Vs Predator Requiem in the style of gothic horror

The people of the village of Tepes once cowered in fear beneath the shadow of an ancient manor rumoured to be the home of a powerful Vampire.  It became a place whispered of in ghost stories to caution young people to stay away. One day four of the village children vanished. Only three returned, with no memory of what happened or where they went.
That was ten years ago. Now, in the year 12,090 A.D., vampires who can walk in the daylight have appeared. Did the disappearance of the children have something to do with the undead's newfound powers? Into this mystery comes the even more mysterious "D"; a tall pale vampire hunter with a sullen air about him. He is instantly handsome and beautiful at the same time, and his prowess with his longsword is matched only by his inhuman strength. What secrets do the children hold in their memories? What secrets does D hold himself? The answer may lie in house on a haunted hill.

3) The Third

Tone: Elysium in the setting of Resident Evil Extinction.

The world is a ravaged desert land. With the help of an artificially intelligent tank called Bogie, Hannah attempts to make a living as a jack of all trades for hire in a future devastated by war and full of over-sized insects that plauge the sands between towns. One day in her travels she comes across a strange man alone in the desert, but rescuing him has consequences and brings unwanted trouble her way. Through this man, Hannah discovers another society observing the devastated earth from a pristine space colony. The mystery deepens.

4) Trinity Blood
Tone: Priest and Van Helsing
The background is in the distant future after the destruction brought about by Armageddon. The war between the vampires and the humans continue to persist. In order to protect the humans from the vampires, Vatican has to rely on other allies to counter the situation. The protagonist, a priest called Peter Abel Nightroad, travels through the countries as a representative for the Vaticans. However, he is also part of "Ax", a special operations group controlled by the Cardinal Catherina. His encounter with a young girl called Esther will determine the struggle and survival between the human race and the vampires.

5) Baccano!
Tone: Highlander with Sin City set in 1920s prohibition era

In the year 1711, a group of alchemists are granted an elixir of immortality, with the stipulation that they must kill each other until there can be only one. The now-immortal group unanimously decides it wasn't worth it and destroy the elixir; but one of them, Slizard Quates, starts to kill off his fellow immortals. To reduce the risk of Quates tracking them all down, the group separates and goes their separate ways. Neither of them crosses paths again till 1930, Manhattan, when Quates manages to create a new elixir of immortality. However, he loses it and it ends up going around town, taken to be a bottle of alcohol and unknowingly drunk by many residents. The drinkers of this new elixir include Isaac and Miria, an eccentric pair of thieves; the Gandor brothers, a Mafia family; and their associates in the Camorra, the Martillos (who employ some of the original immortals). Now, not only are a new group of immortals created, but the simmering criminal underworld is about to explode.

By the year 2090, astronomers are eagerly awaiting the arrival of Ryan's comet which would pass harmlessly through the solar system and pass between earth and Mars in a year's time. Technology has advanced but not to the point of flying cars and teleportation. It is a world much like our own but with a culture that is slowly moving away from war.UN peacekeeping force has been reformed from an armed coalition into an organisation focused on rescue and relief efforts. Dubbed "Lightspeed Rescue" by the international press, these brave individuals utilise cutting edge technology like exo-skeletal protective gear to respond to any disaster.

One Sunday night, the San Andreas fault is breached from below. From the fissure, grey humanoid looking creatures and fearsome monsters up to 4 meters big pour forth. They are followed by a monstrous titan in gold armour with fiery eyes and the face of a blue lion (Goldar). While the titan is tearing itself out of the fissure, the smaller monsters and humanoid creatures (putty patrol) swarm down in the direction of suburban Los Angeles seemingly heading toward the mountains on the other side of the city. The town of Angel Grove is in their way.

These events are not unnoticed. The media gets in on it, filming from choppers. The military is deployed to stop the swarm and the titan. A fierce battle involving both US Airforce and the armoured tank divisions ensues. The humanoids prove impervious to conventional weaponry. Nothing short of the direct impact from tank cannons can slow them down. Nothing short of decapitation and dismemberment can stop them. Armed forces are decimated when the titan arrives at the scene, leaving the monsters and humanoids to swarm toward Angel Grove.

The UN Rescue forces work to evacuate the town of Angel Grove just as the humanoids arrive. In the distance, the golden titan is finishing off the armed forces then holds back as if waiting for the putty patrol to do the dirty work for him. As the putty patrol swarm the town, one Captain Will Mitchell and a small team attempts a last ditch effort to save some trapped children. Mitchell and 3 of his team attempts to fight off the putty patrol as the children are airlifted to safety. It does not go well. Although they put up a good fight, the suits start to fail and The team is killed, and mitchell has been beaten to within an inch of his life.
Just then,  a mysterious individual enters the fray. He is a tall man, clad head to toe in a dark bodysuit that mimics the human musculature structure.(think crysis nano suit). The suit is armoured, consisting of segmented plates that allow flexibility, a solid chest area protecting vital organs, silver gauntlets and shin guards along with chrome markings across his abs and helmet. He proceeds to launch impressive fighting moves against the humanoids, finishing them by ripping off their heads and limbs. He introduces himself to Mitchell as a "Ranger". More Rangers appear in Angel grove, each with distinct color markings. They make short work of the putty patrol using deadly superpowered hand to hand combat and what looks like hand held rail weapons. These rangers are reinforced by A.I controlled war machines shaped like ancient creatures such as dinosaurs and sabre tooth tigers which tear into the monsters with surprising ferocity.

Thanks to media presence and satellite, the battle is broadcast around the world. With the putty patrol and its accompanying monsters decimated, the golden Titan makes his move, heading toward the mountains beyond the town when he is suddenly stopped by a blinding light. From this light a robotic giant emerges.

He is a towering metal colossus with a Viking like horned head, a shield across his chest; his size matches that of the golden monster. The rangers teleport inside and the two giants engage in battle.

The robot's first punch is tremendous, it's force causes a sonic boom which shatters windows in the town. The battle is joined as robot and monster grapple with each other, neither seeming to get the upper hand. Reinforcements arrive in the form of another squadron of US Air Force jets. It is clear now. These rangers and their giant robot are not the enemy. After a titanic struggle, assisted by jets, the giant robot triumphs as the monster is beaten and seemingly explodes from within.

World media opinion is split on the Rangers. Some welcome these saviors, others are suspicious of them, citing their alien origin and timely appearance and air of secrecy surrounding their identities.

Second monster appears approximately a week later and the rangers are called back into action. Similar formula. A pattern emerges. One monster appears each week.
By the 10th week, a particularly disastrous battle ends with the Red ranger cornered by the media. In desperation, he reveals his identity to the world. The Red Ranger is merely Jason Lee Scott: Son, Brother, university student, Practices Karate in his free time. He is just a regular guy.

Overnight, the rangers become celebrities. In between monster battles, they are invited to press conferences where they reveal their own backstory. They were picked by a being of light called Zordon. A self proclaimed guardian of galactic peace, This being has taken it upon itself to provide earth with the means and technology to defend itself against attacks that threaten to destroy the peace on earth. These monsters are the work of one "Rita Repulsa", a witch who apparently made a deal with the devil, sending monsters to wreck havoc on earth. Yet among the rangers a schism starts to develop. The rangers question Jason's decision to go public with his identity, citing the dangers of such an act. Jason merely shrugs it off and says that this is the only way for the public to fully trust them.

This move of public disclosure is welcome by the world media. Reporters are invited to tour the hidden ranger command centre and Zordon makes his first public appearance, assuring the UN and the people of earth of his mission to main the peace.
Battles take a turn for the better with the Rangers and their "Megazord" Robot titan are backed by the full resources of each country's military. Each ranger leads a team of high tech troopers in clearing out putty patrol infested locales. Captain Will Mitchell and much of the lightspeed rescue team is recommissioned as field medics, with Mitchell assigned to Jason's squad. Then when a giant monster arrives, the rangers activate their Megazord backed by heavy artillery, air attack vehicles and tanks.

However, by the 25th week, a tragic event occurs. Rita Repulsa's monsters launch a shocking retaliation. They attack and kill Jason's family and his entire home town, then they manage to capture jason. Rita makes her first media appearance with a televised execution of Jason.

"People of the world. You may not understand why we do what we do. How could you? But we assure you, we do this with earth's best interest at heart. Ask yourselves. Why You are so quick to put your trust in these aliens? What purpose would I have to call forth these creatures? I only seek to unite a shattered world. A far greater war is looming. One I intend to win. But first, all that stand in our way, must be eliminated"

She is not an old crone in a dark hooded cloak, but a young girl, barely a teenager. She leads a cult of hundreds claiming to be an agent of some greater power who has used satanic magic to call forth horrors from the depths of hell. Her agenda is, ironically, to unite earth under a single leadership. The Ranger Command Centre is levelled by 3 monsters which are barely defeated by the singular Megazord which sustains heavy damage.

The decision is made to take a more proactive stance in the war. Instead of sitting by waiting for the next attack, a global manhunt for Rita Repulsa and her cult. A new age of witch hunt begins as paranoia flares across the globe. Among the rangers themselves, the war has just gotten personal. Mitchell is along for each assault and slowly grows disenfranchised with the Rangers' new level of viciousness. They would shoot suspected cult members on sight and openly torture others for Rita's location.

 War escalates.
Between the worldwide witch hunt and defending cities from monster attacks, the Rangers are stretched thin. However, Zordon slowly shares his alien technology with the United Nations, enabling humans to create their own anti-monster defense. Humans start to equip their own soldiers with mechanical augmentation suits and the first human made Zord is completed: The Dragonzord.Shaped in tribute to the famous "Godzilla" movie monster.

Other Zords are created; Titanus the carrier zord (modelled after the ancient Brachiosarus), the T.O.R mobile repair base and a new Zord called "Thunderzord":

Captain Will Mitchell remains with the Rangers, aiming to be a "conscience" of the team. In the meantime, he tasks the other members of lightspeed Rescue to begin construction of their own Zords; The Lightspeed Rescue Zords which are able to combine to form the lightspeed Megazord to carry out large scale relief missions in the wake of monster attacks. This is a bid to creature an autonomous defense force free from the influence of the Power Rangers.

Mitchell expressed the doubts in the Power Rangers' methods, citing that their new proactive campaign makes them just like the monster threats they seek to destroy. For in the midst of the witchhunt for Rita Repulsa, the Rangers invade countries that refuse to lend support to the campaign. Countries like Syria, Egypt, South East Asian Nations are all "coaxed" into signing a treaty agreeing to lend support and resources to the WitchHunt.

On the 50th week of the year, merely a few days before the arrival of Ryan's comet, the rangers have tracked down the remaining cult members to a huge cave in the Himalayas. Upon arrival, Rita Repulsa sacrifices the blood of half her cult to summon form a legion of a thousand putty patrol creatures, at least a hundred monsters and 5 gargantuan creatures.

The resulting battle is utter chaos. Mountain slopes, glaciers and ancient lost monuments, untouched by human hand, are levelled by the clash between the Zords and the monstrous titans. On the ground, troopers and Rangers alike are swarmed by overwhelming forces but manage to hold their own allowing a small team led by the green and pink rangers into the cave where Rita is hiding.

The insertion team encounters the cult but amidst spells of fire and ice, they manage to take down all the cult members standing in their way and head to the inner sanctum, a massive cave with numerous ancient paintings etched into the walls. There they are disabled by Rita Repulsa'snumerous ancient paintings etched into the walls. There they are disabled by Rita Repulsa's dark magic and captured. Outside, the battle is swinging in favour of the monsters as Dragonzord is demolished and Megazord is disabled. With no choice left, Lightspeed Rescue is Forced to used their Lightspeed Zord to extract Megazord from the battle as Titanus launches a suicide run, taking out three of the monsters in the process. Just then, Zordon unveils a new team of Power Rangers, backed by the samurai shaped ThunderZord.

A stalemate is reached as both side have a momentary pause in the battle.

Two soldiers have an exchange

"More Rangers and another Zord? We could have used them earlier. They've been holding back on us"
"I wonder what else they've been holding back"

Carrying out emergency repairs, a team of technicians utilise the "T.O.R" mobile repair base to retrofit Megazord with upgrades salvaged from the parts of the demolished Dragonzord. Within the hour, the retrofitted DragonMegazord is ready to go and is launched back into the fray to assist the Thunderzord.

Rita Repulsa confronts what remains of the insertion team and with her dark magic disables the rangers, leaving only Captain Mitchell.
Rita: "You see me as pure evil. But mine is only a necessary evil. Much like yourselves. You murder as I do, plunder as I do."
Mitchell: "We are not like you. We work for the good of mankind"
Rita: "As do I. And I applaud you for succeeding where I have failed. Yes. You have united a world under one leadership. Cruel Irony, yes."
Mitchell: "Rita Repulsa, we are taking you in for crimes against humanity. Surrender"
Rita: "I am yours Captain. Merely another daughter of earth, making ends meet and trying to protect my home. But think about this. Funny how quickly you throw your faith behind an ambiguous alien who claims to be the good guy. Funny how no one even bothers to ask where my monsters come from or what their purpose is?"
Mitchell: "You will remain silent...."
Rita: "You dont see the pattern. In fighting evil, you turn to an even greater evil. You've seen it yourself. Their methods, their tactics. Murders, torture, things that were supposed to be outlawed by the geneva convention. Yet all these were deemed necessary in a bid to find.......me. A far greater threat is coming Captain Mitchell. To stem this threat, I serve a higher power".
Mitchell: "Who the hell do you work for"
Rita: "Earth. I serve our planet and she has been generous in providing an army. An army you silly humans continually decimate"
Mitchell: "Who are you amassing against?"

Suddenly, the pink ranger regains consciousness and shoots Rita Repulsa dead.
It is an anti climactic end to the worldwide witch hunt.

Casulties number in the thousands. Cities like Los Angeles are ruined by monster attacks while other cities suffer in the wake of attacks by the United Ranger/UN Coalition in their worldwide witch hunt and bid to coax countries into cooperation. A bitter New Year's even arrives as the world mourn the loss. The arrival of Ryan's Comet is all but forgotten as thousands gather around a memorial erected in China honoring those who gave their lives. Zordon addresses the UN that he would continue his vigil over the planet earth to protect it against any threat.

The power ranger programme is opened to the public where aspiring Rangers will be trained thus bolstering the ranks of earth's defenders.

A sombre Captain Mitchell sits at his desk, pondering all he had experienced in the past year. He recalls the cave paintings. He recalls an image of a shooting star passing across a planet. From that star, a being seems to emerge and rain fire upon the planet. The planet itself has unleashed creatures to protect itself against the rain of fire. Rita Repulsa served the earth. The monsters came from within the earth. The shooting star.......a comet.

Oh no........

Ryan's comet passes through the solar system but suddenly, small pieces break off and rocket toward Earth's moon. NASA scientists let it slide as an anomaly. Later, amidst fireworks commemorating the new year, a shower of meteors rain down upon earth. It is a beautiful sight, as if the sky itself were crying.

Awe and wonder turn to stunned horror as the meteors crash into city centres across the globe. Dubai, Beijing, Tokyo, London, Washington, New York, Paris and more. From the fiery rocks, a new breed of monsters emerge; Bulkier, bigger and fiercer than ever, exhibiting phenomenal alien powers of plasma projection, electro magnetic discharges, and chemical weaponry.

Zordon unleashes the full arsenal at his disposal. Multiple teams of Power Rangers and at least 5 new Zords are teleported across the globe to launch a full scale counterattack. As the credits roll, the Zords battle valiantly against the titanic creatures. We pull back from earth to the surface of the moon to reveal the mastermind behind the attacks.

 The Zedd War has begun.

Movie Tweaks: MAN OF STEEL

In movie tweaks, we give little tweaks to movies that I feel could have improved the overall film.

Today, it is MAN OF STEEL.

Man of Steel was awsome. It was emotional, deep and action packed. However, I gave it a 9/10 for a reason. Mainly that it seemed truncated and that more could have been done to drive home the deeper themes about choice and consequence.

See my review here
http://thexamtaroshowvault.blogspot.sg/2013/06/man-of-steel-2013-review.html

So here are the small little changes that i would have made in order to make it a 10/10 rating movie
*SPOILERS AHEAD*

1) An additional flashback to young Clark's encounter with a wild dog
In this flashback (placed before the flashback to Clark's encounter with his junior high school bullies) it begins with flashes of a distraught Clark standing over the bloody corpse of a wild dog. His mother Martha standing in front of the scene, speechless with shock. Jonathan Kent runs to his son and embraces him.
Voiceover of young Clark: "But i didnt do anything! It was biting this kitten and..........."
Jonathan: "Son. It's dead."
Flash to the bloody corpse of the dog and a twitching barely alive kitten next to it
Clark: "I didnt mean to, i just.........i wanted to help......."
Jonathan: "Listen son, I know you meant well"
Martha: "jonathan, now's not the time"
Jonathan: "Son. Listen to me. You couldn't save a life, i understand. But you have a strength in you that no one else has. You must never abuse that strength to hurt others, much less kill.
Clark (in tears): I didnt mean to. I was too late and............I was angry.
Jonathan (hugging his son): We can't save everyone Clark.

2) Jonathan's advice to Clark on choice
Original quote: You're not just anyone. One day, you're going to have to make a choice. You'll have to decide what kind of man you want to grow up to be. Whoever that man is, good character or bad, he's going to change the world.

Replacing Quote: One day, you're going to have to make choices. Tough choices. Choices of good and bad, life and death. And whether those be right or wrong, we have to bear the consequences of our choice. And the judgement of our conscience.

3) The moments before Zod's death
Kal-El: "Zod stop"
Zod: "Never"
The trapped family cowers in the corner as Zod's heat vision creeps closer. Kal El is losing his grip on the crazed Kryptonian warrior.
A tear drops from Kal-El's eye as time slows to a standstill.
Voiceover
Flashback to the school bus rescue

Clark: "What was I supposed to do? Let them die?"
Jonathan: "Maybe"

Flashback to the dead dog

Clark: "It was biting this kitten and..........."
Jonathan: "We cant save everyone Clark."

Events of his life flashes before his eyes in quick time. The smiles, the tears, the surprises, everything

Jonathan: "You must never abuse that strength to hurt others, much less kill."
Clark: "My father believed..........the world........ reject me out of fear."
Jonathan:  you're going to have to make choices.......Tough choices......life and death.....we have to bear the consequences.........judgement.

Flashback to Jonathan Kent's death and Clark's cry of anguish and being unable to save his father

Tears stream down Superman's face as he makes his choice to take Zod's life.  The music reaches a sad crecendo and all sound is silent.
Neck snaps, and scenes play out as per the movie

Movie proceeds from there except we cut to the world media's reaction to Superman. As a clever metaphor of the audience's reaction to superman's suppposedly controversial act of killing to save others, the world media portrayed in the film is split in opinion on superman. There are those who welcome him as earth's new protector and there are those who warn "How far is he willing to go in order to protect?"

Will he destroy a rival nation to safeguard america?
Will he become judge, jury and executionor and kill a murderer?
Will he take the law into his own hands?

The movie ends with Clark deciding to join the daily planet newspaper in order to not just have his "Ear to the ground" but to work on polishing Superman's tarnished image through the media.

Justice League Blockbuster (part 2) - characters

Objective: To present DC characters as both familiar yet fresh.

Assumption 1: This justice league film will follow "Man of Steel".
Assumption 2: It will share the same film universe as Ryan Reynold's Green Lantern.

SUPERMAN
- Previous film portrayals: Christ figure and idealistic symbol of goodness (Christopher Reeves), the idealist out of touch with grim reality (DCAU animated portrayals), a product of a bygone era forgotten by the people he once served (Brandon Routh), the outsider finding his place in the world (Smallville)
Superman's portrayal really depends on his portrayal in "Man of Steel". I am hoping that they play up his role as the "ultimate immigrant". For that is what he truly is; he is a "foreign talent" with extra-normal abilities using those abilities for the good of his new home, yet never demanding payment, never pushes his superiority and humbly blends in with the norms and ways of his adopted countrymen. The ideal foreign talent. On the other hand, we have Zod as "the unwanted foreign talent". He uses his superiority as leverage, he imposes his own ways on the ways of his adopted countrymen (or rather, subjugated earthlings), he doesnt bother to learn the local customs and demands that the locals adapt to his ways.

Like any foreign talent, the good and bad get lumped together.
Throughout Justice League, Superman will be faced with the question of whether Zod was right. Is humanity, in all its ungrateful and spiteful nature, worth saving? In what is the opposite of our current real world situation where the man on the street is vocal in his anti-foreigner sentiments and the powers that be are pro-foreigners, Superman's continued efforts to serve mankind after Man of Steel is slowly gaining support from the silent majority man on the street. It is the powers that be, the big businesses like LexCorp that fear superman and thus use their control over the media to sully his name.

The progression of Superman in Justice League will be similar to Spiderman in Spiderman 2. His selfless acts in the face of media criticisms gains the support of the "man on the street", the silent majority. It is this silent majority who eventually go against what the big media tells us and voice their own love and respect for the Man of Steel.

So we all know that Superman will save the day in the end, but what Justice League willl deal with is his reasons why. Why does superman never lose faith in humanity, why does he fight for what seems like an ungrateful world, why does he protect both saint and sinner alike?
Superman represents HOPE and how ideals can still be kept alive in our current dismal world.

GREEN LANTERN

- previous film portrayals: A joke
Now instead of doing away completely with the joke Green Lantern played by Ryan Reynolds, he will lend unintended comic relief to the team. He has a massive inferiority complex which he covers up with his wisecracks. Having a weapon of unlimited potential, powered by will and the human imagination, he is easily the most powerful of the team. Yes, even more powerful than superman.
Green Lantern is the boy who tries too hard and trips over his own feet. In wanting to impress, he screws up big time. This carries on the theme that was left hanging in the Green Lantern movie: Hal wants to live up to his father's memory. He wants to be a hero people can look up to, but he tries too hard. His ring contructs are more showy than functional, he speaks first before thinking.
Lack of fear leads to impulsiveness, leads to rash decisions with unintended consequences. Since we already have seen the positives of being without fear, it is only right that we see the flip side. In Justice League, Green Lantern will be the symbol of all that is negative about having no fear.
His character arc will also be one where he learns that true heroism does not seek glory.

BATMAN

- Previous portrayals: The campy caped hero, the dark gothic detective, the grim avenger of the downtrodden,
Yes, Batman has had the most varied portrayals on screen. Yet one thing they all have in common is that Batman is revealed to be Bruce wayne very early on. I intend to buck the trend. First, Batman/Bruce Wayne will be the most mysterious of the lot. He is the manipulator from behind the scenes. His methods are unseen, his intentions are vague and contradictory. It is so contradictory that by the end of the movie, the audience will be questioning if indeed Bruce Wayne in this film is Batman. Unlike previous portrayals of Bruce as a kind philanthropist who uses his money to help the poor, this movie will portray him as a mirror Lex Luthor. He only helps people for good publicity, his ruthless business deals and buyouts are slowly encroaching on Lex Corp's subsidiaries, he beds foreign super models on a bi-daily basis. Though he is well learned, he is prone to twist words and manipulate dialogue to his advantage. Plus he is a complete asshole in person. Any interested journalist has been completely turned off by Wayne's manipulation of every single interview session. The press has closed the case on Wayne's personal life and focused on his ruthless business dealings. All of this is exactly according to Wayne's plans.

Instead of taking inspiration from Batman comics, i take inspiration from horror movies; primarily the Saw series. Like "Jigsaw", "Batman" is actually many people, and throughout the whole movie you will never get a full reveal of how Batman's costume looks like; much like in horror movies like Alien.

Referencing Batman Inc and the Bat Family, "Batman"'s operation is an international one. In Gotham alone, there are 6 operatives. Bruce Wayne (33) is the brains and overall coordinator of this international anti-crime effort. He also doubles as "main Batman" (who does the talking). Dick Grayson (21), Jason Todd(19) , Tim Drake(16) and at least 5 more young adult men are his "sidekicks" or "other Batmen". All of these people were "Recruited" into Batman's underground organisation secretly. All of them share a similar profie: A great injustice was done upon them, Bruce Wayne takes them under his wing and hones their feelings into a determination toward preventing such injustice from ever befalling others.

Having multiple Batmen with multiple body builds keeps the legend and the mystery (along with the fear) alive. One crook says Batman is 6 feet tall and imposing, the next crook says he is sleek and agile, the next crook says he is short but viscious. Yet all the different Batmen fight in the same style. They even carry recordings of Bruce's Batman voice. Other accomplices include Barbara Gordon the computer wiz know as Oracle, weapons designer Lucius Fox, detective Renee Montoya and Commisioner Jim Gordon. However, most of Wayne's accomplices dont even know of the existence of the other accomplices. All this is to be revealed only by the end of the movie when, after everyone suspects Batman to be Bruce Wayne, we throw in a "Nick Fury twist" and have Batman save Wayne in front of the media and the rest of the Justice League.

WONDER WOMAN
- previous portrayals: Warrior woman unfamiliar with the ways of men's world, upright defender of the oppressed, hot headed team action girl
Yet there is one aspect from the Wonder Woman comics that the media never tried to portray: the foreign representative of the Amazon women. This time, we make her a diplomat and give Themyscria a more "real world" overhaul similar to the treatment given to "Asgard" in Marvel's cinematic Thor. In Justice League, Themyscria is merely a previously unknown island civillisation whos culture and level of technology seem stuck in the times of ancient Greece. They seem to be a matriarchal society run by women but urban myths and rumors indicate that they are an all female population. First encounter with Themyscria occured during World War II when pilot Steve Trevor,  enroute on a desperate rescue mission, crashed onto the island. A warrior woman representative was tasked of returning Trevor to USA but instead accompanied Trevor on his mission into the heart of Europe.(These events will be further fleshed out in the Wonder Woman stand alone movie which will serve as a prequel to Justice League). Though their involvement in the war was limited, USA offered Themyscria diplomatic ties. They accepted but remained passive in pursuing foreign relations.

In present day, The island nation possesses no threat to foreign power, nor does it have the size or natural resources to interest any country in dealing with it. The Amazon women inhabitants make ends meet through subsistence farming, they worship ancient greek gods like Hera and Aphrodite. Yet their island is continually shrouded by a natural cloud cover that makes satellite surveillance near impossible. Dangerous reefs prevent ships from passing nearby. Due to its near non-existence in international politics or media, the island nation faded from the world's eye until recently.

The massacre at Coast City and the events of "Man of Steel" have spurred Themyscria to send forth a new envoy: Diana, most worthy of warriors and royal princess of the island nation. "Wonder Woman" is the name the media dubs Diana, in reference to her commanding presence, determined personality and perfect physique that conveys equal measure of strength and femininity. Her diplomatic robes harken back to the Greek politicians while her battle garb will be similar to Xena. See left for example.
(ya ok this is a mock up, not done by me at all. But imagine away the battle damage and this is essentially Xena's outfit but with Wonder Woman's colors. Perfect fit for a live action film)

Anyway, WW's role in this will be the voice of reason. She will be the first to give voice to that silent majority that do not agree with the media's slander of Superman. This references back to her earliest comic appearance in which the silent ones who had no say were women at that time.

BARRY ALLEN/ THE FLASH
- previous portrayals: team jokster, most immature and impulsive,
In perhaps the most controversial move ever, The Flash will only be given his power at the END of the movie. Throughout the film, it will focus on Barry Allen and flesh out his role as a failed forensics scientist turned private investigator. Since the team jokster and comic relief role is taken by Green Lantern, Barry Allen here will be the "human element" in the group. As a private investigator, Allen is now obsessed with investigating white collar crime, particularly the big moguls like Bruce Wayne, LEx Luthor and Digger Harkness (fans will remember him as Flash villian Captain Boomerang). He is currently reaching a breakthrough in his investigation on Harkness but has reached a brick wall.

With little choice left, Barry reluctantly turns to Bruce Wayne for help. Wayne claims to have incriminating evidence against Harkness but Barry knows that Wayne is just manipulating him to topple a competitor. For Barry it is a moral question of "Do the ends justify the means". What BRuce is getting Barry to do is definitely illegal but it coincides with Barry's intent to take down a corrupt billionaire and bring justice for the little people. This brings in the second more nihilistic theme: becoming a devil to fight the devil. By bringing justice to one corrupt millionaire, Barry will unwillingly be helping another.

Now, the Flash's origin as a superfast speedster has always bordered on the unbelievable side. Getting doused in chemicals and struck by lightning? We will thus introduce the concept of the "Speed Force"  and be explicit about Barry becoming exposed to the Speed Force, thus setting up his origin as "The Flash". But before that, we shall work the whole "running fast" into a recurring theme for his character.

Barry Allen is a man on the run, figuratively. He sweeps his problems and his past under the rug and moves on. Running away from problems and confrontation rather than facing them down. In Barry's hero journey, it is a simple lesson that some things cannot be dealt with by running away. It is a lesson of courage in the face of danger and taking an active stance against a problem rather than trying to solve it from behind the scenes.(eg: private investigation).

MARTIAN MANHUNTER

The idea here is to play up his inhuman appearance. Preferably, ditch the costume and just go with a very "Alien" look: long head, double jointed jegs, elongated claws etc. Martian Manhunter has always been like the Charles Xavier of the Justice League. As such, we want to play up his mental powers and less on his physical powers. Physically he will look long, lanky and almost weak; a stark contrast to Superman and the rest.
Despite his inhuman appearance, his psychic powers enables him understand humanity in ways no person can ever hope to, thus making him the most "human" among the team. He wont be called by his comic book name but will be continually refered to as "the Martian". His backstory wil be a bit changed: instead of teleporting to earth, he came to earth as the leader of a refugee craft in the 1950s escaping the destruction of Martian society by an unknown threat. The craft crashed on earth (sparking off the UFO craze of the 50s).

He will be incredibly essential to the plot of the Justice League film.

Justice League blockbuster (part 1) - concept outline

Purpose: To launch JUSTICE LEAGUE as a credible movie franchise to rival the success of Marvel's Avengers without repeating "more of the same thing"
Target Audience: Casual action movie audience + hardcore comic book fans

What to keep the same
- intense action beats punctuated by character drama
- fast pace of script
- small but well developed team
- cast chemistry
- Have a distinct "cutting edge present" setting (about 2 years from now) so that science fiction elements will not feel out of place
- Inter hero tension and face off
- Massive climatic battle to showcase the combined might of the Justice League

How to Do things differently
- More "brains". Have a script that challenges the expectations of the viewer
- Less emphasis on comedy, more on intrigue and drama
- Nolan's "gritty realism" has been done. Leave it at that.
- Delve into "thinking" topics such as gray morality, power of the media, hidden agendas, unexpected twists.

To appeal to (Casual Movie audience)
- Tight script with little breathing room. Keep the tension and energy up (no sappy romance scenes)
- Keep people guessing. Dont be predictable (be it villian motives, potential twists etc)
- Do not draw directly from existing storylines or continuity heavy elements (no 5 minute monologue about the history of the Green Lantern Corp)

To appeal to the comic book fan
- remain true to common expectations of the characters' portrayals (Superman = "black and white" morality boyscout)
- Keep portrayals in line with "modern age" and new 52 style

CHALLENGE
= With only 2 existing characters (Green Lantern and Superman) to work with, origin stories for the 3 other Leaguers (Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash) need to be worked into the script.
= Origin story for Batman has to be unlike those already see in film (Batman Begins, Batman Year One)

BASIC ASSUMPTIONS
1) Justice League movie takes place immediately after 2013's "Man of Steel" Superman reboot
2) Ryan Reynold's Green Lantern is a part of the same movie universe
3) Superman and GL are the only known active Superheroes

AT THE ONSET OF THE STORY
a) Superman's battle with Zod rekindles public suspicion about extraterrestrial intelligent life
b) The Parallex incident was incidentally NOT covered up by the government but acknowledged as an extraterrestrial attack.
c) This is a world which is ill at ease with itself. Earth knows there are aliens in other parts of the universe and scramble to create the means to defend themselves. (think of post-War of the Worlds but with all cities and infrastructure intact)
d) Department of Extraterrestrial Operations becomes a public presence. The world is united in the common purpose to protect themselves against extraterrestrial threat.

To be continued in PART 2 - character descriptions
